Pony Club Show - 8th November 2009

And a grand time it was!  The weather at 6 o'clock was damp with a little rain and I foresaw a day of dashing to to the car, but it started to improve by 7 and things looked more hopeful.

We arrived in plenty of time, a bit of nerves on both sides I think, and watched some lunging in the school.

The first classes went well although one pony spooked and unseated it's rider, but unfortunately that's the risk around firework night. The rider remounted after catching their breath and was soon off again. We had a little rain around then but it didn't last long and the sun came out to stay with us for the rest of the day. It was getting close to my daughter's first class and the nerves started to take hold. She has been riding about 17 month's and much of the day was new to her and it was the first time in front of a judge. She got in the ring and even before the class started her spirits lifted when she found out that the judge was not only human but very supportive and kind as well. She was on Enoch and Enoch, who can do better, could sense her nerves and acted up accordingly. After the class she earned a rosette for good effort because, as the judge said, had she had another pony she would have done better.

Spirit's climbed and the sun shone and a grand time was had.

We picnicked in the field and after lunch we were treated to a show by 'The Fillies'. I had known this was coming up and had no real expectations as to what we would see. Some of the girls do cheerleading and I had expected something along those lines and was totally unprepared for what I saw. Four of the girls had dressed up as characters from 'The Village People' and having mounted their ponies they gave us a 'dance' on horseback which ended with 3 of them kneeling in the saddle and doing the arm movements of 'YMCA'. Yes only 3 knelt because the fourth stood instead! They then dismounted by sliding down the ponies rumps.

It was VERY good! Well Done and Thanks.

We then went on to a fancy dress parade with a halloween theme and while the winners costume was brilliant, a zombie bride on a zombie pony with a zombie bridesmaid, I must admit that my personal favourite was the second placed that was a faceless crusader holding a boy (the pony rider) captive on ponyback (is that a word?). It was a brilliant and convincing costume and if any one has photos of the winners, in fact everyone who entered, then I would love to put them up so everyone can enjoy them.

The final classes of the day were jumping classes and these were very entertaining. A brilliant effort was made by all the competitors. Two competitors were worthy of special note. Lou wasn't entered but when everyone had done she was persuaded to have a go and as she mounted Cyril, for the first time in her life, they set about raising the height of all the jumps much to Lou's surprise. She had expected to take him over the two foot jumps. She had a go and did very well, given that it was weighted against her and that would have been the highlight had Cyril's rider for the day, Jessica, not asked if she could try him at these heights. She doesn't have Lou's experience and I take my hat off for even trying!  She had a go and had a couple of minor issues, but did brilliantly despite until it came to the last fence. Now here is a secret that I am pretty sure I saw.  The kidnapped boy from the fancy dress had raised that fence after Lou had jumped, in order to demonstrate he could jump it as a high jump. He had not expected Jessica to have a go. Cyril was wrong footed on the approach and Jessica went over his head. She landed well and was quickly back on and took one final jump of the day.

It was a REALLY good day and enjoyed by young and old alike.

When I get the results I will post them on the Pony Club News page, and in the mean time I would appreciate any photos people have.

Opportunities for loans

I mentioned that Cyril and China are new on the yard. I was watching an experienced rider on Cyril and she had him walking sideways, backwards and turning in his length. Obviously it takes an experienced rider to achieve this but he moved beautifully and she said he was easy to ride.  Well it seems that both Cyril and China are available for loan. Check the site out and contact Dawn if you are interested. It also transpires that Benny, that old favourite and much ridden pony, is again available for loan. My daughter has ridden Benny on many occasions, as have most of the youngsters in the school. Yes, he requires encouragement, but he is dependable and shies very rarely. He is loved by all.

First News

Welcome to the blog I have started for the riding school where my daughter rides.

I plan on blogging any news I have and anything that the school or Pony Club are up to, so if you have anything to contribute please let me know through their website which I help to maintain for them.

The first thing I want to say is a brave admission. I don't understand 'horsey' people's passion for all things 'horsey'. Now that may whip up a storm but I genuinely don't.

I have been around animals all my life and love big animals as much as small ones - that is bulls, elephants, giraffes and horses as well as dogs and cats. In fact one of my best friends ever was a dog who broke my heart when I had to have him put down. But I don't go soft over any animals I see and it's that, that I don't understand. Perhaps one day I will understand, but today it is lost on me!

Well I said this blog would contain news as well and there are a couple of news items.

The first is that the 'shed' that was the loo is no longer and a proper loo has been commissioned! ENJOY - if needed.

The second is there are a couple of new horses on the yard - Cyril and China. They are 16'2" ex dressage horses and are a magnificent sight to see.
